ORRELL METHODIST CHURCH - LANCASHIRE

Text Box: Text Box:

The nameplate reads

new, low, roof to be fitted to the building this coming June makes it impossible to retain the instrument.

The organ was installed in the original Orrell church c.1912 and transferred to the present building c.1960. For over 90 years it has adequately fulfilled a primary role in the accompaniment of hymn singing for a congregation of about 200.

Flutes dominate the stop list in all departments. The Diapasons are full, and clear throughout the keyboard range. They usefully combine with Flutes at all pitches. The Strings are quiet but somewhat thin. The Swell Horn, the higher pipes of which are spotted metal, is assertive. Swell Diapason and Gamba are carefully grooved into the Lieblich Gedacht from tenor A downwards. The Great Hohl Flute (several pipes of which are damaged) is metal with pierced wooden stoppers.

Two keyboard notes are defective; their re- paletting is necessary. Re-leathering of the pedal pneumatic motors is desirable. Some pipes of the Great organ are cramped, and the roof of the Swell box is provided by the building's ceiling. The keyboards are original; the keys worn. But there is no evidence of running in the soundboards.

Though lacking in upperwork , sympathetic regulation has meant that the Swell Octave Coupler provides some acceptable tonal compensation.

Overall, this organ is an instrument not without musical merit. It is looking for a new home where it can continue to accompany worship.

The organ must be moved prior to the building alterations which are expected to commence at the beginning of this coming June.

Because of the very short time left, it has been listed for auction on Ebay - Item number 7318172730.
